California Teen Starts Farm, Earns Cash for Family

High school senior Mellise Allbright, 18, devised a plan to help her family make ends meet four years ago after her stepdad, a handyman, fell from a horse and was unable to work. Mellise’s brainstorm – a garden that generates enough food to support a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) – not only helped out the family, it put her town, Elk Creek, Calif., on the map as a tourist destination. These days, Plants by Mel sells local honey and grass-fed beef along with local crops, the first of which will be ready this weekend.
