Local Food Fetched Online in Alabama
Thursday, December 15th, 2011When Jen Barnett was a teen, she and her family drove to farmers’ markets and filled up their trunk with fresh-grown produce. That was before local food was “in” and hip. Not long ago, though, she found that her trips to find farmers in her native Alabama grew longer and farther. Not only that, she learned that farmers, on average, earned about 16 cents for every dollar their products fetched. Barnett and her business partner, Sam Brasseale, started Freshfully, a Web site where Alabamians can find local farmers’ markets, or order local products – everything from mint to Angus beef – online.
