Arkansas Teen Turns Truffles Into Trade

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

A funny thing happened to 16-year-old Ian Purkayastha when he ate black truffle ravioli with foie gras sauce. The taste was so amazing he just had to have more. But truffles cost a bundle – typically $150 a pound, and up to $2,000 a pound for the rare ones – so Purkayastha’s options were limited. Until he talked his way into a job with an Italian truffle distributor, that is.  Today, at age 18, Purkayastha has seen his distributorship “mushroom” into a booming enterprise; he’s one of the largest distributors on the east coast.

Food Bank Opens for Arkansas College Students

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

When many teens think about people living in hunger they might not consider college students to be among the needy. But at the University of Arkansas many students live meal to meal. They need help. “A lot of college kids are first generation college kids, not every college student gets their education paid for, a lot of them have to struggle, choose education over basic needs like food,” Brittany Arroyos, of the Volunteer Action Center, told KSFM-TV. As a result of the need, the university has started its own food pantry.
