Chefs Design School Lunches For Vending Machines
Wednesday, August 17th, 2011Many teens can punch in their favorite vending machine selections almost as fast as they can text their buddies. For these teens, like a group of students from the Miami-Dade school system in Florida, school lunch just got a whole lot easier. Shuddering at the thought of Ring Dings and Sno Balls for lunch? Not here. These machines aren’t vending junk food. They’re filled with healthy options, including local food, with meals designed by local celebrity chefs including the Food Network’s Michelle Bernstein.

Teens’ Twist on Traditional Recipes Yields Cookbook
Tuesday, March 1st, 2011What do you get when you combine dishes from the American south and the Caribbean with star chef Jamie Oliver and a bunch of teens from Booker T. Washington Senior High School in Miami? Collard greens, parmesan chicken and bread pudding, that’s what. Oliver, in Miami for the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, dropped in on the school’s culinary club to see what kids were cooking up. The teens and their advisors had teamed up with nutrition experts at Florida International University’s College of Medicine to re-work their families’ traditional recipes into healthier versions. The dishes were so popular the teens published their recipes in the Overtown Cookbook.
