A dairy farmer on the Big Island of Hawaii has discovered that happy cows lead to increased milk production, and it turns out that cows are happier when they get a good night’s sleep. In a place where there’s little straw and sand to spare, bovine bedding has been burdensome, until now: The farmer plans to install 320 waterbeds for his cows. Evidence shows that the cozy digs result in cows producing 10 to 20 percent more milk.
