Michigan Teens Cook with Culinary Rock Stars

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Teen chefs from the culinary arts program at Lenawee Intermediate School District Tech Center in Adrian, Mich., teamed up to cook with a trio of the nation’s top chefs in Chicago recently at the National Restaurant Association’s annual food show. Students cooked with chefs Rick Bayless, Stephanie Izard and David Burke, using ingredients and materials they sourced from vendors at the event and cooked on site – all in just 90 minutes.

“It was a great experience,” senior Luke Pawson told Erik Gable of the Daily Telegram. “We walked around, talked to a lot of the vendors, got our names out there and tried to make contacts with people and networked a lot.”

Illinois Teen Works to Legalize Backyard Chickens

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

When New Trier High School junior Zan Fisher was growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, her family raised chickens in the backyard. The feathered fowl not only produced eggs for the Fishers, but they served as family pets. When Zan and her family moved to Wilmette, Ill., though, they were forced to leave their chickens behind. In Wilmette, animal ordinances prohibit chickens and other livestock from neighborhoods.

Fisher decided to work to change some residents’ misperceptions about her feathered friends. The teenager embarked on a project for her Integrated Global Studies class that studies the health and environmental benefits of backyard chickens. Her ultimate goal: to legalize chickens in the yard.
