Michigan Teens Cook with Culinary Rock Stars

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Teen chefs from the culinary arts program at Lenawee Intermediate School District Tech Center in Adrian, Mich., teamed up to cook with a trio of the nation’s top chefs in Chicago recently at the National Restaurant Association’s annual food show. Students cooked with chefs Rick Bayless, Stephanie Izard and David Burke, using ingredients and materials they sourced from vendors at the event and cooked on site – all in just 90 minutes.

“It was a great experience,” senior Luke Pawson told Erik Gable of the Daily Telegram. “We walked around, talked to a lot of the vendors, got our names out there and tried to make contacts with people and networked a lot.”

Michigan Teens Run High School Restaurant

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Monday through Wednesday the teenagers in culinary class at Howell High School in Michigan learn the trade in the classroom. Come Thursday and Friday, though, the teens don their chef coats and get cooking at the school restaurant. They cook up breakfast and lunch from scratch and cater events when needed. Come January, they plan to host a dinner for charity featuring wild game.

“My goal is to have students to walk away with a ServSafe certification and walk into that food industry job and be able to plug right into it,” culinary arts teacher Brian Leboeuf told the Livingston Daily. “We’re really trying to be that minor-league team to that major-league play.”
