Airport Food Vendors were Heroes during Blizzard

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

College student Uddin Kutub worked for 20 hours straight at Famous Famiglia Pizzeria in Newark the other day — not for the overtime pay, but to help out travelers stranded at Newark Liberty International Airport during the big blizzard.

A holiday weekend might be the least likely time you’d expect businesses to remain open – never mind during severe weather conditions. But Kutub and other food vendors at Newark Liberty shoveled themselves out at home, fetched their colleagues for work, then stayed put during and after the blizzard while the airport was shut down for 24 hours following the storm.

“I felt like, people getting stuck, we can help them,” said Kutub, who was born in Bangladesh and is a student at Essex County College. “They were happy.”
