High Schools Provide Unique Food Education

Throughout the country, high school teens are coming up with innovative ways to get their schools and classmates involved in, er, beefing up school food. Whether it’s planting school gardens, running in-school cafes or  improving the fare on the lunch line, students are trying to find ways to incorporate sustainability, care for the planet and entrepreneurship into their classroom curriculum. The Daily Meal dishes on its findings.

Texas Teen Chef Wins Scholarship

Texas teen Faith Longnecker has a sweet tooth and her own business, Dolci-Treats, creating and selling desserts. And when she was faced with a challenge of creating shrimp cocktail, chicken, broccoli and rice pilaf among other teen chefs she knew exactly what to do. Her efforts netted her a $1,500 scholarship to culinary school. It won’t be her first time toting a toque. Last summer, the teen studied for a month at the French Culinary Institute in New York City. And today, everything is going according to plan.

Astronauts Pack Favorite Foods for Shuttle

Inside NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston, chef-scientists are freeze-drying strawberries by the kilo, preparing in advance a huge shipment of astronauts’ favorite foods for their months’ long foray into space next summer.

Outside though, meals are already secured in the space shuttle Discovery, which is set to launch later today. There’s shrimp cocktail, beef tips with mushrooms, macaroni and cheese, chocolate pudding cake and apple cider, already packed. All the meals need are a few squirts of water from a syringe and they’re rehydrated and ready to go.
